It's a long-held tradition in sports to question the award winners (and the people who vote for the award winners).

"Smith was much better than Jones -- why is Jones the MVP?"

"How could they choose So-and-So as the best rookie?" Now, the Outsider's Guide is providing the fans with a vote of their own.

We want you to cast your ballot on seven awards, from the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards to ones NLL doesn't give out, like Coach of the Year and Most Improved Player.

For major awards, you are asked to choose more than one candidate. In those cases (MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Goaltender of the Year), rank your choices so that the most deserving player is your first choice, the next-most deserving choice is your second choice, etcetera.

Also, in these categories, please make sure you give as many votes as are asked for. An incomplete ballot will not be counted for that question, nor will one that lists the same player more than once in the same category (if Gary Gait is your first-choice MVP, he can also be your choice for Attacker of the Year but can not your second-choice MVP). This especially applies for choosing the "other" option -- be sure you specify at the bottom of the page a player to match each instance where "other" is chosen, and indicate which player goes with which award if you choose "other" more than once.

We're also looking for names for these awards -- the James Bishop Coach of the Year Award, maybe? Please do not suggest an active player or coach for an award name. Retired players and coaches are fine, however.

Most Valuable Player: Given to the player who was more responsible for his team's successes in 1999 than any other player. Vote for three, on a 5-3-1 basis.

Rookie of the Year: Given to the first-year player who performed best this year. Vote for two, on a 3-1 basis.

Goaltender of the Year: Given to the goaltender who was more responsible for his team's 1999 successes than any other goaltender. Vote for two, on a 3-1 basis.

Coach of the Year: Given to the coach who produced the best results for the talent available to him. Vote for one.

Attacker of the Year: Given to the player whose offensive performance in 1999 was superior to any other player's. Vote for one.

Defenseman of the Year: Given to the player, excluding goaltenders, whose defensive performance in 1999 was superior to any other player's. Vote for one.

Most Improved Player: Given to the player whose efforts in 1999 were of greater improvement over his previous season than any other player's. Vote for one.
