Resch to leave Wings after season?New job could leave coach unable to continue in NLLR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Tony Resch may be forced to resign his position as coach of the Philadelphia Wings after the season because of work commitments connected to his new position as a high school athletic director. Resch, the winningest coach in Wings history, has accepted an offer to become the athletic director at La Salle High School in Philadelphia, and will begin there this summer. Resch is no stranger to a wide assortment of roles. He has taught at Penn Charter for nine years, where he is also assistant athletic director, middle school football coach, and varsity boys' lacrosse coach, making him, as the Philadelphia Inquirer puts it, "one of the busiest educators in the city." And then there are the Wings, who Resch has coached for seven years, the longest current single-team streak in the league. While Resch's tenure at Penn Charter must end with his shift to La Salle, his future as Wings coach is unclear. "[Returning as Wings coach] was definitely a topic of discussion," Resch said. "I'm just trying to finish out this year. The way the Wings are run, everything is kind of year-to-year. It remains to be seen. I know being athletic director is going to be more of a time commitment, and that's my number one priority. As we progress through the summer, I'll have to make a decision about that. "I want to be sure I'm giving full attention to La Salle. I've been juggling for a number of years now. The Wings have been a great thing for me, but between playing and coaching it's been 14 years." Fans are beginning to speculate on who would replace Resch if he decided to step down, with much of the attention so far focused on former Baltimore Thunder / Pittsburgh CrosseFire coach John Tucker. Since the Wings have a strong reputation for hiring from within the family, Tucker and Wings assistant coach Adam Mueller (both former Wings) could each get strong consideration. -30- |
