Columbus, Montreal deadline extended

Livsey, Watters have until owners' meeting to choose teams' fates

The National Lacrosse League has extended the deadline for relocation and expansion, until the Board of Governors' annual meeting later this month.

The deadline, originally yesterday, has been moved to 10 June, when the governors meet at Hilton Head, SC.

The extension allows Brad Watters and his latest group of investors, who want to bring indoor lacrosse to Montreal, and John Livsey, who apparently does not have the finances to continue operating the Columbus Landsharks, an extra ten days to come together on a deal to move the troubled team to the Molson Centre.

If a deal can not be reached by the time the owners meet, Watters will restart his petition for an expansion franchise, a bid likely to gain quick approval, while Livsey may be forced to suspend the Landsharks' operations or fold the team outright.

Livsey, of course, is not limited to negotiating with Watters and the new deadline does not apply to simple team sales, so the former commissioner could sell the team to someone else, relocate it himself, or try to keep the Landsharks operating for another season.

If Montreal is added as an expansion franchise, it will be given the fourth drafting spot in both the 15 June expansion draft and the 24-26 August entry draft, with all existing teams dropping one spot in the latter.
