Wings promote Adam Mueller to head coachFormer player, assistant becomes fifth coach in team historyR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Philadelphia Wings today promoted assistant coach and former player Adam Mueller to head coach, filling a vacancy created by Tony Resch's resignation last month. Mueller becomes the fifth man to coach the Wings, following Steve Wey, Dave Evans, Mike French, and Resch. "Adam understands the Wings playing style and team philosophy, and has a solid outlook for the team's future," Wings general manager Marty O'Neill said. "We will rely on Adam to continue the winning tradition of Wings lacrosse." Mueller's responsibilities will include bench management during games, player recruiting and scouting, and organization of the team's tryouts, training camp, and practices. Mueller's eleven-year playing career included stops with the Detroit Turbos (1990-1994), Baltimore Thunder (1995-1996), Philadelphia Wings (1997-1999) and Albany Attack (2000). In seventy-six career regular season games, he recorded 122 points (51 goals, 71 assists). He played for two championship teams, the 1991 Turbos and 1998 Wings. This past season, Mueller served as Resch's assistant coach, guiding the offense in the Wings' 12-4 championship season. Resch resigned in July, after months of consideration, in order to devote more time to his position as athletic director at a Philadelphia high school. He had been the longest-tenured active coach, leading the Wings for the past seven seasons. An assistant coaching staff has not been named, but former Wings Chris Flynn and Paul Denikan have been rumored as contenders. -30- |
