Trade talks going down to the wireToronto Sun: Govett seeking top two picksR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief If Washington Power general manager Steve Govett gets his way with several draft day trades, the NLL landscape could be quite different next season. It would probably make commissioner Jim Jennings' day, too. Govett tells the Toronto Sun in today's editions that he is close to acquiring not just the first-overall pick from the New York Saints, but also the second-overall pick from the Calgary Roughnecks. With the draft scheduled for 6:00 PM tonight at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, Govett has mere hours to consummate the deal. Govett's plan is seemingly quite simple once he gets the top two picks -- draft the suddenly much-maligned Gavin Prout and trade him to the New Jersey Storm, the only team he wishes to play for, and then select and keep Blaine Manning. Of course, deals like this are easier said than done, and in order to succeed, Govett likely must part with at least one American player to secure Prout and some western Canadian talent to nab Manning, plus find fair compensation in the Storm's already-depleted cache of players and draft picks. If that's not enough, Govett's working to overcome stubborn Saints owner Mike Gongas, who is still threatening to select Prout and make him sit out the next two years, and the fact that the Power has no picks in the first two rounds of tonight's entry draft. Still, Govett thinks he'll get it done. "We've put something pretty impressive on the table and I can't see those teams turning it down," he said. League officials could be breaking out the champagne at this development -- if Prout can be directed to the Storm without any of the underhanded business that has been suggested recently (rumors of Prout being paid by the Storm to hold out persist despite the Loyola star's strong denials), Jennings will have dodged the largest bullet he may ever face as NLL commissioner. Gongas and Roughnecks coach/GM Kevin Melnyk concede that they've talked with Govett, but neither is confident that a deal would go down. Melnyk has also been talking with Toronto Rock coach/GM Les Bartley, as has Vancouver Ravens general manager Dave Evans, with young western star Kaleb Toth the centerpiece of any offer. Despite his desire to move up and snag and University of Hartford defender Derek Suddons, Bartley refuses to trade Toth just for the chance to jump from twelfth-overall to second or third. "I've told people what I need and I'm just going to sit back and see what happens," the Rock coach said. "There is no point rushing into anything." Try telling that to Govett. He was last seen fitting Blaine Manning for a red, blue, and silver jersey. -30- |
