Former Saint John Salerno is missing and presumed dead.

Salerno worked for Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, which occupied floors 101 to 105 of the North Tower at the World Trade Center. The North Tower was the first building to be hit by a hijacked plane, striking very high up the 110-story structure.

Originally from Port Washington, NY, Salerno played collegiately for St. Johns University. In one game with the Saints, in 1993, Salerno recovered two loose balls. He took no shots on goal and finished with no points.

"The World Trade Center attack has touched us all," NLL commissioner Jim Jennings said. "The entire league sends its heartfelt sympathy to the Salerno family."

Russ Cline, president and co-owner of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League when Salerno played and currently the co-owner of the Philadelphia Wings, said, "This tragedy has affected all areas of the sports world, including lacrosse. John will be missed greatly. The lacrosse world also lost several coaches and players from the college and high school levels. Our hearts go out to all of their families."

A memorial service for Salerno was held on Sunday.

No one currently affiliated with the National Lacrosse League, either as a player, team official, or league official, was injured in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

US Lacrosse executive director Steve Stenersen today released a list of known fatalities from the lacrosse community, and Salerno was the only entry who played professional indoor lacrosse. This makes it likely (although not certain) that Salerno will ultimately stand as the only loss among indoor lacrosse alumni.

Stenerson posted the list on the lacrosse listserver to confirm to ensure that all victims associated with lacrosse have been identified, in advance of the creation of a memorial at US Lacrosse headquarters in Baltimore.

To contribute to the memorial effort, contact US Lacrosse Director of Development Sally Ratcliffe at 410.235.6882, extension 104, or via email at sratcliffe@lacrosse.org. To share information about the known missing/dead or to add to the list, contact Stenerson at sstenersen@lacrosse.org.
