Major trade in the works?

Roughies, Rock said close to Toth trade

The Calgary Roughnecks sent out a press release Friday stating that they plan to announce a "blockbuster trade" this coming Tuesday.

The Toronto Rock has also told media outlets to expect news of a major deal to emerge on Tuesday.

Should it surprise anyone, considering the matching dates, Calgary's yearning for Kaleb Toth, and Toronto's desire for Blaine Manning, that the trades-in-waiting are actually one and the same?

Granted, the deal is not done yet -- "We're still working some things out," says Roughnecks owner and interim general manager Brad Banister -- but it's close enough that the only issue to settle may be the peripheral swapping to balance the deal.

Sources close to each team report that the trade likely will send Toth to his hometown team in exchange for Manning and the Roughnecks' first-round pick in next summer's entry draft.

Toth, the second-overall pick in the September 1999 draft, has blossomed into an NLL star, recording 23 goals and 22 assists in fourteen games for the Rock last season, respectable numbers on a team that emphasizes defense. Toth's most famous goal was his last-second strike in the 2000 NLL Championship Game, breaking both a 13-13 tie and the backs of the visiting Rochester Knighthawks.

Manning was the second-overall selection in last month's entry draft, plucked from the WLA's Victoria Shamrocks, who he helped to a 19-0-1 record this summer, the first undefeated season in league history. Along the way, Manning appeared in fifteen regular season games, scoring 26 goals and assisting on 24 others. In ten playoff games, he added 16 goals and 14 assists.

The trade would make commuting to games much easier for Manning, who reportedly didn't want to play for Calgary due to how far he'd be from his girlfriend, who lives in Baltimore. The Washington Power (NLL's closest team to Baltimore) tried to acquire Manning before, during, and after the draft, to no avail.

A parting shot from Banister -- a Toth/Manning trade may not be the only one the Roughies announce on Tuesday.
