Rock trades Chris Gill to RavensHoldout star proves you can go home againR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editr in Chief Article amended 9 November 2001 to include quotes from Dal Monte (paragraph 3) and Gill (5), and to include additional information about Gill (6) . The Toronto Rock has traded holdout forward Chris Gill to the Vancouver Ravens, the Outsider's Guide has learned. Gill, who refused to play for any team other than his hometown Ravens, goes west with a second-round pick in next summer's entry draft, while Ian Rubel and the Ravens' first-round pick next summer head east. "We believe Chris Gill is a natural fit for the Vancouver Ravens and we’re very pleased to get him," said Ravens director of lacrosse operations and head coach Paul Dal Monte. "He’s been on our hit list for a while now because we were looking for left-handed scoring."Gill played all fourteen regular-season games for the Rock last season, scoring 19 goals and recording 15 assists. He added three goals and two assists in two playoff games. He was one of only four players to compete in 14 games last season without being called for a single penalty. "I’m very excited to have the chance to help build the Vancouver Ravens into a championship team in the National Lacrosse League," said Gill. "I’m proud of the two rings that I was part of with the Rock, but I’m committed to making this new franchise competitive immediately and a contender soon." The twenty-five-year-old Gill had been with the Rock its entire four-season existence, including a year as the (Hamilton) Ontario Raiders. He was selected in the first round of the 1998 Western Canadian draft for expansion teams. Rubel had no points and nineteen loose balls in ten games with the Columbus Landsharks last season. However, the offseason has been quite active for Rubel -- he was transferred to Montreal in the infamous "hybrid expansion" deal with Columbus, was selected in the expansion draft by Vancouver, and had reportedly been pushing the Ravens for a trade. The pick the Ravens received began as their own selection. It was sent to Toronto last month for Matt Dwayne. -30- |
