Wings, Saints split Player of Week honorsMarechek, Eliuk, Colsey, and Prout share awardsR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Two players each from the Philadelphia Wings and New York Saints claimed the National Lacrosse League's Player of the Week awards for Week Four, the games of 8-9 December. Philadelphia's Tom Marechek claimed the Overall Player of the Week award for a five-goal, two-assist outburst in Vancouver on Sunday, a game the Wings won, 18-14. One of Marechek's goals came late in the second period, halting a 5-0 run by the Ravens and giving the Wings a 7-6 lead. Teammate Dallas Eliuk took Defensive Player of the Week honors, stopping 47 of 61 Raven shots. The most crucial of those saves came late in the fourth quarter, when Eliuk stopped Chris Gill on a penalty shot, holding the score at 17-14 and killing Vancouver's last best chance at a comeback. The night before, on Long Island, Offensive Player of the Week Roy Colsey recorded five goals, including the game-winner in the third quarter, and added three assists in the Saints' 20-16 comeback win over the Calgary Roughnecks. Colsey scored three times in New York's eight-goal third period, sparking the Saints to their second post-halftime rally in as many games this season. Colsey's sidekick in the second-half onslaught was Gavin Prout, Rookie of the Week. Prout scored three goals on Saturday, including a pair in the pivotal third quarter, posted five assists, scooped up eight loose balls, and won both faceoffs he contested. This marks the fifth time that Marechek has been named Player of the Week, but the first since early in the 2000 season. By a curious coincidence, Eliuk and Colsey are also making their fifth appearances on the Top Players list. For Prout, the highly-touted prospect who was selected first-overall in August's entry draft, this is the first time he has been honored by the league. -30- |
