McMahon, Bartley selected as All-Star Game coachesKilgour, Mueller to assist South; Day, Dal Monte to be North deputiesR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The National Lacrosse League today selected Toronto Rock head coach Les Bartley and Albany Attack head coach Bob McMahon to skipper the North and South teams, respectively, at next month's All-Star Game. The postseason exhibition will be held on Sunday, 21 April at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. It will be televised live in the United States on CNN/Sports Illustrated, and on tape-delay in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet. Bartley will be joined on the North bench by Rochester Knighthawks coach Paul Day and Vancouver Ravens coach Paul Dal Monte. McMahon's assistants will be Darris Kilgour of the Washington Power and Adam Mueller of the Philadelphia Wings. Bartley, the winningest coach in league history, led Toronto to an 11-5 record and the Northern Division title this season. In eleven seasons coaching in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and NLL, Bartley has reached the postseason a perfect eleven times, reaching the league championship game eight times, winning the title five times, twice with the Rock (1999 and 2000) and thrice with the Buffalo Bandits (1992, 1993, and 1996). Bartley's squad at the All-Star Game will be comprised of players from the Rock, Knighthawks, Ravens, Calgary Roughnecks, Montreal Express and Ottawa Rebel. McMahon, in his first season as the Attack's coach after two seasons as Terry Sanderson's assistant, skippered the team to a league-best 14-2 record this season, securing the Central Division title and home-floor advantange throughout the playoffs. As head coach of the South All-Stars, McMahon will lead a team of players from the Attack, Power, Wings, Bandits, Columbus Landsharks, New Jersey Storm, and New York Saints. Between Bartley, McMahon, and the four assistants, all six playoff teams will be represented behind the bench at Mohegan Sun. Day coached the Knighthawks to a 13-3 record and the top wild card berth this season, Dal Monte rallied his Ravens (10-6) to a seven-game winning streak at the end of the season, Kilgour skippered the Power to a 9-7 record and the Eastern Division title, and Mueller led an injury-plagued Wings team to an 8-8 mark and the league's final playoff berth. By a quirk of seeding, the All-Star assistant coaches face each other tomorrow night in the NLL quarterfinals -- Vancouver visits Rochester and Washington visits Philadelphia -- and the winners of each game will meet the head coach from the opposing All-Star team in the semifinals next weekend. -30- |
