NLL to withhold announcements until after 18-20 June gathering

The National Lacrosse League today announced that it will not comment on expansion or relocation until after the league's Board of Governors meetings later this month.

NLL now has several weeks to finish off a series of moves in advance of the owners' gathering, slated for 18-20 June in New York City.

Among the issues the Board of Governors must tackle is the Washington Power's all-but-completed sale, in which Colorado Avalanche (NHL) and Denver Nuggets (NBA) owner Sam Kroenke will move the team to Denver, its third shift since 1999.

The sale of the Montreal Express, however, will give the owners far more to consider. Express president Brad Watters is fielding bids from a group that would keep the team in Montreal and from investors seeking to move the team to either Winnipeg or Edmonton.

Although the most recent race summary puts Winnipeg in the lead, Edmonton remains a viable entry, and one reportedly fronted by Calgary businessman R. Bruce Stewart. Complicating matters, the NLL has already awarded Stewart an expansion franchise in Edmonton, if only he'd apply for it.

Stewart's success in forming an ownership group and securing the Express could impact where the expansion franchises are placed. The owners are expected to place a moratorium on expansion at sixteen teams, and if Edmonton picks up a new franchise, only two spots will be left for several American cities, including Los Angeles, San Jose and Portland.
