Vancouver Ravens assistant coach Rod Jensen today officially was named as the new head coach of the former Washington Power, now located in Denver.

As first reported on this site more than two weeks ago, Jensen takes command of the as-yet-unnamed team, which has called Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Washington home since 1999.

"Rod brings enormous talent and experience with him," team president Steve Govett said. "Everyone associated with the club is confident that Rod's respect among players, coaches and staff makes him the right man to coach this team as it begins play in its new home."

Jensen played nine years with the Western Lacrosse Association's Vancouver Burrards, reaching the top ten in scoring four times on his way to a 190-goal, 270-assist career. After his playing days, Jensen entered the field of coaching, skippering teams in lacrosse, basketball and football around Vancouver, where he still lives and teaches high school.

"Coaching in Colorado is the chance of a lifetime," Jensen said. "The enthusiasm of the fans and the Kroenke organization (team owner Kroenke Sports Enterprises) will be rewarded -- this is going to be a terrific team to watch."

Jensen will be joined on the Colorado bench by assistant coaches Ward Sanderson, who will serve as defensive coordinator, and Jamie Batley, the team's offensive coordinator.

The unnamed team filled two front office positions today, as well -- Denver-area lacrosse great George McGeeney is the team's director of player personnel, while retired star Paul Gait will serve as director of player development.

Gait won the NLL's Most Valuable Player award this past season with the Colorado franchise, then known as the Washington Power.

In other news, Govett announced that the team will hold open tryouts on Sunday, 13 October at Pepsi Center.

"There are a number of schools with great lacrosse traditions in this area," Govett said. "In addition to a number of former pro players in the region, we expect to see some great former college players try out."

Players can register for the tryout at the team's web site, coloradolax.com, or by calling 303.405.1340.
