Kelusky, Merrill top picks on double draft dayRoughnecks select young star; Rock grabs Coquitlam defensemanR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Footnotes section updated 24 September 2002 to include all draft-day trades. On the National Lacrosse League's double draft day, Tracey Kelusky was selected first in the morning dispersal draft while Pat Merrill became the first selection of the afternoon entry draft. Kelusky, taken by the Calgary Roughnecks, and his Montreal Express teammates were made available in a special allocation after the team suspended operations last month. Calgary, though, has more needs than just a premier forward, although Kelusky's 44 goals and 50 assists would look awfully nice on the Roughnecks, and so the team had been entertaining trade offers for the pick, and will continue to listen to interested teams. However, Roughnecks head coach Chris Hall talks like a man who doesn't want to let go of Kelusky. "It's like striking gold," Hall said. "Tracey Kelusky is one of those rare finds in this sport... To have the opportunity to get him is a huge boost for our organization." "He's going to be a tremendous leader for us." In order to select an Express player in the dispersal draft, teams had to release a player from their 23-man roster. Calgary opened up by dropping Dave Bremner, an assistant coach who suited up late in the season and did not intend to return to uniform. While the Roughnecks got the top prize of the draft and the biggest steal (Brad MacArthur, who fell all the way to 13th-overall), the big winner might have been Ottawa, which turned six selections in the two-round draft into Bruce Codd, Jason Crosbie, Mat Giles, Eric Pacey, Shawn Zettel and Shawn Parnell. The Rebel's heavy buildup of picks was no surprise, considering that their new head coach, Terry Sanderson, skippered the Express a season ago. The pick that yielded Pacey was the most recent to arrive in Rebel hands, courtesy of a trade with Philadelphia. Ottawa picked up the Wings' seventh-overall dispersal draft pick and their sixth-overall entry draft pick for defensemen Rory Graham and Andrew Guindon. The Wings, exciting their fans who had risen early to follow the proceedings, immediately announced that they had flipped Graham's rights to Colorado for veteran defenseman Paul Cantabene. Colorado, in turn, quickly matched an offer sheet Graham had recently signed with Vancouver. The remainder of the dispersal draft moved quickly, with 23 picks completed in barely over a half-hour. Three teams -- Philadelphia, Rochester, and Toronto -- passed on their second-round choices, contributing to the quick pace. By noon, the team executives had moved from their hotel, where the dispersal draft was held behind closed doors, to the Platinum Club at the Air Canada Centre for the entry draft, where Toronto head coach Les Bartley opened the festivities by selecting Merrill. "I had butterflies when I pulled it over my shoulders," Merrill said of modelling a Rock jersey after his selection. "This team breeds winning and I'm excited and honoured to be part of it." Columbus followed with three straight selections, although it dealt the middle one to Buffalo, who used the pick on Billy Dee Smith of St. Catharines. To get the youngster, the Bandits sent their first-round pick (7th-overall), a third-rounder (28th-overall) and Pat Maddalena to the Landsharks. With the two picks it kept, Columbus selected Jon Harasym of Brampton and Travis Gillespie of Coquitlam. Down at number seven, the 'Sharks grabbed Rory Glaves from St. Catharines. In the meantime, New York used the fifth-overall pick on Victoria's Nick Carlson and Ottawa spent the earlier-acquired number six pick on Orangeville's Peter Veltman, nephew of Toronto Rock star Jim Veltman. Later in the draft, two picks were discarded. The Albany Attack forfeited its seventh-round pick by drafting Tyler Harris, who had been selected three rounds earlier by Buffalo, while Ottawa passed on its ninth-round selection (99th-overall). The results of both drafts follow.
