Kevin Finneran traded to TorontoWings get young d'man Candy for NLL's IronmanR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Philadelphia Wings today traded forward Kevin Finneran to the Toronto Rock for defenseman Drew Candy, ending a month of speculation about the future of the league's leading ironman. In November, Wings management permitted Finneran to shop himself around to other teams after deciding that his role would be drastically reduced this season. Finneran spoke with at least half the league before settling on the Rock. It appears there is no better fit for Finneran, at least in the short-term, than the Rock, which has lost Kim Squire for an indefinite period to flesh-eating disease, Dan Stroup to a trade-demand holdout, and several other offensive weapons to minor injuries. Finneran's consecutive games streak, now at 122 regular season games (139 including playoff games), follows him to Toronto, where he will become, in all likelihood, the first American in franchise history to appear in a game. Last season, Finneran scored 39 goals and dished out 40 assists with the Wings. He has tallied 211 goals and 296 assists in twelve seasons, one each with the New England Blazers and Detroit Turbos and the last ten with Philadelphia. His twelve seasons in the league ties him for most ever, with Wings goaltender Dallas Eliuk, Colorado Mammoth forward Gary Gait, retired forward Paul Gait, and Rochester Knighthawks forward Tim Soudan -- all teammates of Finneran's at some point in his career. In return for the 36-year-old Finneran, Philadelphia receives Candy, a young defenseman born and raised in London, Ontario. Selected in the second round of the September 2000 NLL Entry Draft, Candy spent a year on the Rock's practice squad before making the show in 2002. In nine games with the Rock last season, Candy scooped up eighteen loose balls and tallied 39 penalty minutes, but was held without a point. Candy didn't come to Philadelphia for his offense, though. "Drew adds depth and toughness to our defensive lineup," Wings general manager Marty O'Neill said. "He will be a great asset to the Wings as we look to add youth and strength to our roster." -30- |
