Colorado fires head coach Rod JensenSkipper sacked for team's poor record; Batley takes overR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Colorado Mammoth last night fired head coach Rod Jensen, due to the Mammoth's inconsistent play this season. As first reported on the Outsider's Guide last night, Jensen will be replaced him on an interim basis by assistant coach Jamie Batley. "I felt it was necessary to make a change," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "Rod Jensen is a tremendous person and a good coach. However, the team was not responding to him." Batley, who already was the head coach of the Peterborough Lakers (OLA Major), takes over a team that leads the Eastern Division despite a weak 4-5 record. Batley sports a lengthy lacrosse resume, including three years coaching the Peterborough Lakers (two years at Junior A level, and one at Major). He played for the Lakers' Junior A team in the mid-1980s, winning a pair of Minto Cups. He then went on to play for Peterborough, Six Nations and Akwesasne in OLA Major competition. Prior to this season, Batley's only MILL/NLL experience was as a player. He broke into MILL with Buffalo in 1994, then played for the Bandits again in 1999. He's also had stints with the Syracuse Smash (1998) and Pittsburgh CrosseFire (2000). The new skipper's first test: the Vancouver Ravens come to town Saturday night. "I realize how important it is for us to establish a winning streak beginning with this weekend's game at home," Batley said. "Our team needs to come together and use this as a turning point for the season." Whether that winning streak comes with Batley still at the helm is unclear, since Govett would not commit to his new coach beyond this weekend. "We will continue to evaluate the coaching situation in the coming days in hopes of making a formal announcement of the head coach next week," Govett said. -30- |
