The Philadelphia Wings announced today that they have extended the contracts of head coach Adam Mueller and general manager Marty O'Neill through next season.

It is not a surprise that O'Neill would return for a third year as the Wings' general manager. He is credited with successfully retooling the team in mid-season, when the Wings rebounded from a 2-5 start, closing at 8-8 for the second straight season.

However, many expected that the Wings' inconsistent play all season and the fact that the missed the postseason for the first time since 1991 would cost Mueller his job.

"While we are disappointed that our team did not make the playoffs this season, we felt that we saw lots of progress in many of our younger players and the team's ability as a whole," Wings president Russ Cline said.

"We feel that this team is poised to make a championship run next season under the guidance of Marty and Adam," Cline added.

O'Neill played eight years as a goaltender in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and National Lacrosse League, beginning with the Pittsburgh Bulls (where he did not appear in a game) but spending most of his career with the Boston Blazers. Following stints with the Syracuse Smash and Buffalo Bandits, he retired from the NLL in 2000.

O'Neill also owns Maximum Lacrosse, a lacrosse equipment company.

Mueller spent ten seasons in MILL and NLL, three with the Wings. He began with Detroit in 1990, joined the Baltimore Thunder five years later, hooked up with the Wings in 1997, and had a cup of coffee with the Albany Attack in its first season.

Mueller then came back to the Wings as an assistant coach on the 2001 Champion's Cup-winning team, and took over the top spot the following season.
