The National Lacrosse League will hold a media conference call Monday afternoon, when San Jose's long-awaited entry into the league will formally be announced.

Although not specified in the NLL's press release today, and certainly no surprise to anyone who follows the league, the Bay Area's newest professional sports team will almost certainly be the Albany Attack.

Albany, under owner Herb Chorbajian, failed to draw satisfactory crowds in four years at Pepsi Arena. The Attack drew an average of 3,689 fans this season, ahead of only the Columbus Landsharks (3,138).

The San Jose team will play at the HP Pavilion, which is also the home of the NHL's San Jose Sharks and arena football's San Jose SaberCats.

During Monday's conference call, slated for noon Pacific time (3:00 PM Eastern), NLL commissioner Jim Jennings will be joined by team owners Peter Wendell and John Bergsma, general manager John Mouradian, and Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment executive vice president Malcolm Bordelon.

Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment owns the Sharks hockey team and is expected to run the lacrosse team. It could also have an ownership role.

San Jose is the first of potentially five franchise moves this offseason. The Landsharks appear close to relocating to St. Paul, Minnesota, while the New Jersey Storm reportedly is in talks to move to Phoenix; however, neither shift is official yet.

Elsewhere, the Ottawa Rebel is exploring a move, with Edmonton and Winnipeg among the possible new homes, and the New York Saints are up for sale. Although possible, the Saints are unlikely to relocate, with a suspension of operations the probable outcome if a local buyer can not be found.
