Ten players file for contract terminationPLPA: Five players each from Saints, Landsharks seek free agencyR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Ten players have filed contract termination notices with their National Lacrosse League clubs, the Professional Lacrosse Players Association reported today. On its web site, plpa.com, the players association published a list of New York Saints and Columbus Landsharks players claiming breach of contract. The ten players listed are New York's Gavin Prout, Josh Black, Nick Carlson, Gee Nash, and Scott Stapleford; and Columbus' Derek Suddons, Dan Dawson, Bill Greer, Travis Gillespie, and Jon Harasym. The players association did not identify the specific breach of contract, but usually this means that a player claims he has not been paid in a timely manner. Teams have ten days to settle a termination-of-contract grievance or request arbitration, or the grieving player can become an unrestricted free agent. PLPA also did not address the conflict between today's report and one published on its web site a few weeks ago, stating that Nash and Saints forward Matt Shearer already had been granted unrestricted free agency. In Nash's case, the first report was premature. However, it is unclear if Shearer actually has been set free yet, although league sources suggested several weeks ago that his free agency was "imminent." The announcement today included a little extra for the readers. With a new collective bargaining agreement yet to be hammered out and a long record of union complaints about how teams treat their players, PLPA accused the Saints and Landsharks of withholding union dues from players' pay and pocketing the money.
