Denver to host 2004 All Star GameFebruary exhibition to be held at Pepsi CenterR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Denver's Pepsi Center will host the 2004 National Lacrosse League All Star Game, the league is set to announce tomorrow. The Outsider's Guide has learned that the midseason classic will be hosted by the Colorado Mammoth in late February, likely on either 22 or 29 February. The Mammoth was the smash hit of the 2003 season, drawing more than 16,000 spectators for its debut game in Denver. The team had played before sparse crowds for many years before that, as the Baltimore Thunder, Pittsburgh CrosseFire and Washington Power. NLL commissioner Jim Jennings will speak during a media conference call scheduled for 3:00 PM Eastern, 90 minutes after a press conference for the Denver media. This will be the NLL's first all star game since a 2002 postseason contest at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Team North (the league's five Canadian teams, plus Rochester) defeated Team South that day, 14-10. Previous all star games have included a 1991 tilt at the Spectrum in Philadelphia (National Division 25, American Division 20) and a 1999 match at Rochester's Blue Cross Arena (Canada 25, United States 24 in overtime). There is no firm word on format, but with the NLL considering realignment from three division to two, an East-vs.-West showdown would be a natural matchup. -30- |
