Anaheim to maintain "Storm" monikerName, logo same after move from Jersey to SoCalR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Edited 18 September 2003 to include Santye quote about name (paragraphs 9 and 10). With many around the NLL expecting the second brand-new team name in as many days, Anaheim Lacrosse announced today that the big news is that there is no news. Contradicting previously-announced plans for a new name and logo, Storm governor Chip Santye said at a press conference that the club will be known as the Anaheim Storm when it begins play at Arrowhead Pond this season.
In fact, the Storm's logo is unchanged, except for replacing "New Jersey" with "Anaheim" -- and that's a tiny change. The logo features "Storm" in capital letters and white text on a field of light blue, with an angry, pitbull-faced lacrosse player lunging out of the 'O'. The player has a light blue lightning bolt on his chest, and gray and black provide the trim for the logo. "The Storm logo and team name has and will continue to be a big part of the club," Santye said. "We hope to offer the city of Anaheim and the Arrowhead Pond an exciting product both on and off the floor this season." The club competed as the New Jersey Storm the past two seasons. It moved to Anaheim in July, due to dismal attendance at Continental Airlines Arena. This is the first time in league history that a team has relocated to a new metropolitan area and retained the old nickname. On two previous occasions (the New Jersey Saints' move from East Rutherford, NJ, to Uniondale, NY; and the New England Blazers' move from Worcester, MA, to Boston), a team switched cities within a metro area and kept the nickname. But why not something new? "We looked at four or five different possibilities... and nothing really struck us that strongly," Santye said. "We looked at our name, looked at our logo and said, 'You know what? There's nothing wrong with this name or logo. Let's just keep it.'" Among those in attendance at today's announcement were Storm players Steve Sombrotto and Marc Morley, who will pay a visit tomorrow to Fox Sports Net's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period." The segment will tape during the afternoon and air that evening (check local listings for air times). This will be the league's second appearance on TBDSSP. In March, Colorado Mammoth forwards Gary Gait and Brian Langtry were interviewed prior to their 19-16 win over the Albany Attack. Because they were in Denver, Gait and Langtry appeared via satellite. With Sombrotto and Morley already in southern California, it's possible they will join hosts Chris Rose, Tom Arnold and John Salley in the studio. -30- |
