News Update 24 September 2003

Toronto will again host Entry Draft

NLL clubs to select amateurs at Westin Harbour Castle Hotel

The National Lacrosse League announced today that this fall's entry draft will be held at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto, on Saturday, 25 October at 10:00 AM.

This is the second straight year the entry draft will be held in Toronto, following last September's visit to Air Canada Centre.

In a roundabout way, it's also the second straight year the NLL has visited the Westin Harbour. In 2002, the NLL conducted a dispersal draft at the hotel several hours before shifting to Air Canada Centre for the entry draft.

The NLL has made one change to its draft rules, increasing the draft-eligible age from 20 to 21 for players not playing lacrosse for an American college.

Otherwise, eligibility is the same -- players enter the draft by reaching the age of 21 during the 2003 calendar year, by notifying the league of his intention to enter the draft (for those under the age of 21), or by exhausting his NCAA or NAIA eligibility.

Players who are drafted and subsequently attend a US college will be removed from eligibility to play in NLL until exhausting or waiving any future college eligibility, and the team which drafted that players forfeits his draft rights.

The draft order itself might appear unfamiliar to those who've followed these things in years past. Selections belonging to the Ottawa Rebel and New York Saints, both under a suspension of operations, were removed for the list, as were (for the first time in recent memory) at least seven other selections, for unspecified violations of league rules.

Between the forfeitures and the Saints' lost stash of top picks (courtesy of trades over the past year), only five of a possible eleven first-round picks will be exercised.

The league is left with a total of eighty selections, which it has condensed into eight rounds of ten picks each.

The complete draft order is as follows:
