K'Hawks sign Paul Day to two-year extensionDean of active coaches enters tenth season in RochesterR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that head coach Paul Day has signed a two-year contract extension in which he also becomes the team's assistant general manager. "It’s our tenth year and it’s amazing how time has flown by," Day said. "In 1997, we won the championship and it was the tenth year of pro lacrosse. Hopefully, our tenth year will be that successful." Day, a coach on the Knighthawks' staff since the team's inception in 1995, has a 61-31 record (including 4-6 in the playoffs) since taking over as head coach three years later. Day is tied with Toronto's Les Bartley as the longest-tenured active head coaches, at six seasons apiece with their current teams, and only a handful of players around the league have been with their respective teams longer than he has been with Rochester. Day has coached the Knighthawks into the playoffs each season he has been head coach, reaching the NLL Champion's Cup final three times (1999, 2000, and 2003). However, Rochester's only championship came in 1997, when Day was still an assistant coach on Barry Powless' staff. Day has a pair of All Star Game victories to his credit, though. He was Team Canada's head coach for a 25-24 overtime win in 1999, on home turf at Blue Cross Arena, and was an assistant coach of the 2002 North Team, which defeated the South, 14-10. Day also won a Major Indoor Lacrosse League championship in his only season as a player, with the 1992 Buffalo Bandits. -30- |
