Bandits trade Casey Powell to StormBuffalo gets two first-rounders in five-player, three-pick dealR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Editor's Note: Paragraph five amended to show draft pick as 2005 first-rounder, not 2004. Paragraph nine amended to show that Watkins was originally drafted by New York, not Buffalo. Former first-overall draft pick Casey Powell is on the move again. Powell, the top pick of the September 1998 entry draft, by the Rochester Knighthawks, was traded today by the Buffalo Bandits, going to the Anaheim Storm in a five-player, three-pick deal. "It is unfortunate that Casey will not be suiting up with his brother Ryan in a Bandits uniform," Bandits general manager Kurt Silcott said. "[Powell] requested the trade and after over a month of negotiations we were finally able to come to an agreement that will help both teams. We’ve given up a lot but also gotten a great deal in return." Along with Powell, Anaheim acquires forwards Marc Landriault and Nate Watkins, plus the Bandits' second-round selection (19th overall) in this year's entry draft (to be held Saturday, in Toronto). In exchange, the Bandits receive forward Neal Powless, goaltender Derek General, the sixth-overall pick on Saturday, and a first-rounder in 2005. Powell, who now lives in California, has not played in the NLL since 2000, when he recorded 28 points (twelve goals and sixteen assists) in ten games for the Rochester Knighthawks. In May 2001, Powell was traded to the Bandits in a seven-player blockbuster trade. He later signed a contract with the Bandits but never reported. Landriault scored two goals and dished out six assists for the Ottawa Rebel in 2003, coming over to the Bandits in the 31 July dispersal draft for the now-dark Rebel. Watkins, a 2002 second-round pick by the New York Saints who was later traded to Buffalo, has never appeared in an NLL game. He attended the University of Maryland. Powless scored seven goals in five games for the Storm last season, while General handled the bulk of the team's goaltending chores, posting a 13.27 goals-against average and a 75.7 save percentage in thirteen games. This is the Storm's first trade since moving to Anaheim this summer. The past two seasons, the team played as the New Jersey Storm. -30- |
