Pat Coyle dealt to Ravens for picksRock bags second-, third-round selections for veteran defensemanR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The rebuilding process continued Tuesday in Toronto, where the Rock traded veteran defenseman Pat Coyle to the Vancouver Ravens. In exchange, Vancouver gives up its second- and third-round picks in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft. Coyle was among only a handful of players remaining from the Rock's original incarnation, the 1998 Ontario Raiders. He followed the team north to Toronto the following season, winning NLL championships in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003. In seven seasons with the team, Coyle developed a reputation as one of the league's top defensemen. His standout back-end play was rewarded with the Defenseman of the Year award and a First Team All-Pro selection in 2002, as well as several All Star Game selections. Coyle, whose career includes a brief stint with the Detroit Turbos in the mid-1990s, has tallied 23 goals, 68 assists, 620 loose balls, and 330 penalty minutes in his 96-game regular season career. In twelve playoff games, Coyle has added two goals and seven assists. However, new coach Terry Sanderson is in the process of reshaping the Rock, and the 34-year-old western Canadian apparently didn't fit into Sanderson's plans. "I really didn't want to leave Toronto but if it had to be anywhere I'm glad it's Vancouver," Coyle said. "It's humbling when a team says, basically, they don't want you." Coyle's trade comes one week after a blockbuster deal with San Jose, in which the Rock parted with another "Original Rock," transition ace Steve Toll, and two other veterans in order to acquire playmaking forward Josh Sanderson. More trades are expected. "Part of our success in Toronto was that we were like a family," Coyle told the Canadian Press. "You see your family slowly being chipped away, it's hard." -30- |
