The National Lacrosse League will conduct an expansion draft to help stock the roster of the Minnesota franchise on Tuesday, 19 October 2004, at 2:00 PM Eastern.

The yet-unnamed franchise will be able to select one unprotected player from each of the other ten teams.

Those clubs had the option of protecting ten runners and two goaltenders, or thirteen runners and one goaltender. Four teams (Anaheim, Philadelphia, San Jose and Toronto) opted for the 10-and-2 approach, while the other six went for the additional three runners.

The choice was pretty well decided for Toronto, which reportedly has already agreed to send goaltender Anthony Cosmo to San Jose as the player to be named later in the 28 July trade of Josh Sanderson to the Rock.

Because it is unclear if Cosmo can play this season, due to work issues, San Jose wanted to protect both Rob Blasdell and Brandon Miller.

Notable names left unprotected include Calgary goaltender Matt King, Philadelphia forward Jake Bergey, and San Jose forward Dan Teat.

Twenty-one players, previously designated as unrestricted free agents, were listed by the league as unprotected but are not eligible to be selected in the expansion draft.

In related news, the league announced that the 2004 Entry Draft will be held exactly one week later, on 26 October at 8:00 PM Eastern, via telephone conference call. This year's draft will last six rounds, totalling 66 selections.
