Bandits get #1 pick in major tradeSwarm acquires Accursi and Susheski; Clark dealt to ArizonaR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief No surprise here -- just three days after being selected by the Minnesota Swarm in Tuesday's expansion draft, Dan Teat is a Buffalo Bandit. The surprise is how he got there. While most NLL observers were anticipating a simple two-for-one or three-for-one trade like the deals Minnesota had pulled off with Toronto and Colorado earlier this week, the Swarm (still not officially the name) and Bandits combined on a blockbuster today. Teat, Tyler Francey (acquired by Minnesota earlier in the day), and the first- and 21st-overall picks in next week's entry draft are headed to Buffalo. Mike Accursi, Kerry Susheski, the 8th-overall selection in the entry draft, and a 2005 first-round pick in next year's draft are Minnesota-bound. "Obviously, this is a big trade," Bandits general manager Kurt Silcott said. "When you lose players like Mike Accursi and Kerry Susheski, it will definitely affect your team. However, we feel that the players we got in return will have an immediate impact on this club." The centerpiece of the trade, Teat ranked third in goals (34) and fourth in points (52) for the San Jose Stealth last season. He recorded hat tricks in ten of San Jose's sixteen games, including a six-goal outing against eventual champion Calgary. However, with Teat exposed in the expansion draft and with his home near Toronto, it became almost a foregone conclusion that Minnesota would select him and look to swing a trade with an Eastern Division foe. The other big acquisition for Buffalo is the top pick in Tuesday's draft, widely expected to be spent on Delby Powless of Rutgers University. A product of the Six Nations development system, Powless burst into prominence playing for the Iroquois Nationals at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in May 2003. In seven games, Powless scored 26 goals for the Nats, best in the tournament. Francey, who was acquired by Minnesota earlier today in exchange for Jason Clark, scored two goals and assisted on five others for the Arizona Sting in 2004. Accursi, a seven-year veteran of the league, tied for second on the Bandits in points (54) last season and was third in goals (26). He shared the faceoff role on the Bandits, posting a 44.3 percent success rate in 2004. In three games, Susheski tallied four goals and three assists for the Bandits, and added fourteen loose balls. -30- |
