Roik earns Storm second straight weekly awardSix goals allowed in big win at Colorado; Doyle, Powless honoredR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Look out for the Anaheim Storm, the new beast of the National Lacrosse League's weekly awards! One week after Casey Powell earned the first Overall Player of the Week award in franchise history, goaltender Matt Roik repeated the feat, using a big win at Colorado to bag the top award. Toronto Rock forward Colin Doyle and Buffalo Bandits forward Delby Powless picked up the other awards for Week Fourteen, the games of 1-3 April. Roik, who also was named Defensive Player of the Week, allowed just six goals on 58 shots in the Storm's 10-6 victory Saturday night at Colorado. The upset victory kept alive Anaheim's against-all-odds run for its first-ever postseason berth. Doyle, Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, has no such worries, with the Rock one win away from locking up home-floor advantage throughout the playoffs. He exploded for five goals and three assists Friday night against Calgary (a 16-10 victory), then tallied three goals and eight assists the next night in Philadelphia (17-15 victory). Powless, the Rookie of the Week, scored two goals and two assists in Buffalo's 11-9 Friday night win over the Rochester Knighthawks. The victory, coupled with Toronto's wins, clinched a playoff berth for the Bandits. Roik is a three-time Weekly honoree, but this is his first time as the Overall winner. Doyle is a seven-time selection, while Powless has one previous award to his credit (Rookie of the Week, Week Five). -30- |
