It's not business as usual for NLL Portland24-year-old clothing designer introduced as owner of league's newest teamR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief For the second time in a week, National Lacrosse League commissioner Jim Jennings was out west to officially welcome a new team to the league. A few days ago, Jennings was at Rexall Place in Edmonton, sitting next to Alberta RV mogul Bruce Urban. Today, Jennings was at the Rose Garden in Portland, welcoming a decidedly different type of owner. For one thing, Angela Batinovich designs women's clothing instead of selling Winnebagos. At 24, she's also the youngest majority owner in league history (and possibly the youngest in any professional league) and its first female owner. We know what you're thinking, and no, it's not as crazy as it sounds. Batinovich's clothing line, Bat's Daughter, sells in 75 boutiques nationwide and she is financially backed by her father, Robert, a retired real estate baron. Andrew Batinovich, Angela's brother, and Wallace Krone, a family friend, have also invested in the Portland team. Andrew Batinovich is chief executive officer of Glenborough Realty Trust, the company his father founded in 1978 and ran until two years ago. Angela Batinovich is betting on Portland sports fans having the same reaction to indoor lacrosse as she had. She attended the Calgary-Colorado game on New Year's Day and immediately was hooked on the sport, following the Anaheim Storm around the country while putting together her plan to invest. "We're very excited to bring this hard-hitting game [to Portland]," she said. "I think the fans are going to love it. "I think people are looking forward to something new and exciting." Global Spectrum, which runs the Rose Garden and already is in partnership with the Philadelphia Wings, will help run Team Portland, although Angela Batinovich has made it clear that she will be very hands-on. "We have a young, vibrant owner who has been successful at a very young age," Jennings said. "She is going to be our first female owner in the league and we're all very excited about that." The Portland club currently has no name, but is accepting suggestions at nllportland.com. -30- |
