Despite the lack of wooden sticks in the National Lacrosse League, look for expansion Portland to be laying out the lumber this winter.

Team owner Angela Batinovitch announced today that the brand-new team will be known as the Portland LumberJax.

"LumberJax" won an online poll over Shadow and Fear, nearly drawing a majority of the votes.

Batinovitch also unveiled the team's logo, which follows in NLL's lengthy tradition of cartoonish stick-wielding characters (see also: the Calgary Roughnecks rigger, the San Jose Stealth ninja, the infamous Syracuse Smash dude, etcetera).

Portland's twist on the familiar theme is fairly reasonable, with "callous-looking lumberjack figure" (Batinovitch's term, not ours) holding a stick with a shaft made of wood.

Dressed in a dark red hat and flannel shirt and complete with a five-o-clock shadow, the lumberjack looks more threatening than most of NLL's other logo characters.

The word "Portland" arches over the lumberjack's shoulder in black letters on a tan background, with "LumberJax" in large white block letters with black trim. The entire logo has a gold border.

In other LumberJax news, Batinovitch announced a partnership with the World Forestry Center. A portion of the revenue from every season ticket sold will be donated to the Portland-based WFC, a nonprofit educational institution that supports sustainable forests.

In addition, the team has a brand new website, portlandjax.com.
