Bridesmaid Glaves finally picked #1

Second-overall pick twice before, forward goes first in dispersal draft

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride? Not for Rory Glaves, not anymore.

Last October, Glaves was the second-overall pick in the NLL Entry Draft, taking the ferry ride from the BCLA's Victoria Shamrocks to the Vancouver Ravens.

Two months later, with the Ravens having dropped out of the league, Glaves went second-overall to the Anaheim Storm in a dispersal draft.

Glaves finally reached first-overall status today as the initial selection in Anaheim's dispersal draft, made necessary when the Storm closed operations last month.

Glaves, an All-Rookie Team selection, appeared in fifteen games for the Storm in 2005, tallying a goal, three assists, and plaudits for superb defensive play.

The Portland LumberJax followed by selecting forward Casey Powell, who led the Storm in goals (27) and points (57) last season.

The draft continued quickly with another fourteen selections, including goaltenders Matt Roik third-overall to San Jose and Matt King sixth-overall to Calgary.

Aside from Portland and Edmonton, who do not yet yet have full rosters, each team was required to release a player from its active roster for each Storm player it selected.

No attention-grabbing moves there, though -- the action came afterwards, when teams started making a series of trades which ultimately landed five former Storm players in Portland, along with the three already selected by LumberJax coach (and former Storm coach) Derek Keenan.

Portland found a trading partner in Minnesota, which began the wheeling and dealing by making separate trades with Edmonton and Philadelphia.

The Rush sent dispersal draft pick Damien Davis, expansion draft selection Jeff Spano, and a 2007 first-round draft pick to Minnesota for forward Kerry Susheski, defenseman Ted Jenner and a third-round selection in this year's entry draft (31st-overall).

Minnesota then flipped Spano to the Wings -- from whom Edmonton had drafted the defenseman last week -- along with the ninth-overall pick in this year's entry draft for Philadelphia's dispersal picks, Peter Morgan and Pat Jones.

This allowed the Swarm to package four Storm players -- Morgan, Jones, Davis, and Ryan Powell (the last of whome Minnesota selected) -- and ship them to Portland, in exchange for Brock Boyle, a third-round pick in this year's entry draft (24th overall), and a first-rounder next year.

In another trade, Portland picked up King from the Roughnecks for the 13th-overall pick in this year's entry draft.

Elsewhere, the Arizona Sting unloaded its dispersal draft picks (Matt Dwane and Chris McElroy) for a 2007 second-round entry draft pick.

Prior to the draft, two Storm players -- Richard Morgan and Shawn Cable -- were declared unrestricted free agents by an arbitrator, due to (according to league sources) breach of contract by the Storm.

Dispersal draft results follow:
