John Grant wins first MVP awardLed NLL in goals and points as Knighthawks finished 14-2R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Rochester Knighthawks forward John Grant is down to just one item on his to-do list for 2007. Lead the National Lacrosse League in goals scored? Check. Lead the league in total points? Check. Lead the Knighthawks to the league's best record? Check. Lead the Knighthawks to the NLL Championship Game? Check. And now that Grant was honored yesterday with his first NLL Most Valuable Player award, the only thing he hasn't achieved this season -- hasn't achieved in his career, for that matter -- is to win the championship game. "Any time you get an individual honor like this it feels good, but at the end of the day the goal is still to win that Champions Cup," Grant told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. "Sure, it's a nice accomplishment, but the season won't be acceptable to myself or the team until we win the Cup." Grant gets that chance tomorrow afternoon at Arizona (4:00 PM Eastern; televised live on Versus and tape-delayed at 7:00 PM Eastern on Sportsnet); it will be Grant's third trip to the finals and the fourth for Rochester since its last title (1997). In the meantime, Grant can reflect on a statistically dominant season, in which his goal and point totals (51 and 111, respectively) topped those of all other players and his 60 assists fell just one short of the league lead. Of those 51 goals, fourteen came as part of Rochester's league-best power play, which converted its man-up chances at almost a 59 percent clip. In addition, he scored five goals while the Knighthawks were shorthanded, another league-leading total. In one game, 27 January against New York, Grant collected fifteen points, on nine goals and six assists, breaking a league record which dated back a decade and a half. He could've had even more -- at nine goals, he finished one short of the record in that category, too. But perhaps what Grant is most proud of thus far is the Knighthawks' 14-2 regular-season record, including a perfect 8-0 at home. Rochester has not lost since mid-January, a streak which now stands at twelve regular-season games and two playoff games. Grant was twice selected as the NLL Overall Player of the Week (Weeks Five and Nine) and three times as the Offensive Player of the Week (Weeks Five, Nine and Fifteen). Earlier this week, Grant was named as an NLL First Team All-Pro, the seventh time in his eight-year career he was selected as an All-Pro and the fifth time he made the First Team. -30- |
