Sorry, Colorado -- Jim Veltman is staying put.

Veltman, the target of a serious offer from the Colorado Mammoth to retire from playing and become the Mammoth's head coach, today signed a five-year contract to remain with the Toronto Rock.

"I'm ecstatic that Toronto has committed to me and my family for the next five years," Veltman said. "The Rock is an organization that I started with and watched grow through the good and bad times. I'm happy to continue with that group of people and with a club that we're all so proud of."

The deal allows Veltman to play one more season, his sixteenth as a pro and eleventh with the Rock franchise, before retiring to join the team's coaching staff.

"It is a tremendous step for our organization to have Jim stay with his team," Rock president Brad Watters said. "We are thrilled to have him lead and coach our team for the future. He and [head coach Glenn] Clark will be a dynamic pair in preparing our team for our sixth NLL championship."

Veltman entered the Major Indoor Lacrosse League with the expansion Buffalo Bandits in 1992, playing five seasons there before skipping the 1997 season. He returned in 1998 to join the new Ontario Raiders, which became the Rock the following season.

In 180 career games, Veltman has scored 151 goals and dished out 476 assists, and has won eight league championships, three with Buffalo (1992, 1993, and 1996) and five more in Toronto (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2005).

His claim to fame, though, is in his nickname -- "Scoop." Veltman is, far and away, the league's alltime leader in loose ball recoveries (2,295) and led the league in scoops every season he has played except for this past year.
