The Edmonton Rush today fired Paul Day, the only head coach in team history.

Day, who was also relieved of his duties as general manager, took the fall for the Rush's 0-5 start. Edmonton is the only team in the league that has yet to win a game this season.

Day's assistant coaches, A.J. Jomha and Jim Milligan, were also let go. No replacements were named, although with the Rush playing this Saturday, it shouldn't take long for that to happen.

"This is an unfortunate situation considering the amount of time and effort that Paul, A.J. and Jim put into the Rush since the team's inception prior to the start of the 2006 National Lacrosse League season," Rush president Duane Vienneau said.

"But the expectations for the team were not being realized this season and a significant change was necessary. There is a lot of talent on this team; however, the record does not reflect where we should be in the standings. We needed to make a move while there is still time to make a concerted effort to reach the NLL playoffs for the first time in our history."

Day was named the National Lacrosse League's Coach of the Year in 2004, while he was with the Rochester Knighthawks. He resigned there after the 2005 season, after eight seasons as head coach, and quickly landed in Edmonton, building the expansion Rush from the ground up.

In Day's first season in Edmonton, the Rush finished a dismal 1-15, but showed major progress last season, improving to 6-10 and contending for a playoff berth.

A major criticism of the Rush all three seasons has been its lack of offense. The team finished last in goals scored in 2006 and 2007 and is the only team averaging less than ten goals per game this season.

In his role as general manager, Day repeatedly revamped the roster in search of more offense, to no avail.
