Dan Carey wins NLL Sportsmanship AwardMcElroy, Garrity honored; Tutka wins Borelli AwardNLL Press Releases Colorado Mammoth forward Dan Carey is the winner of the National Lacrosse League's 2008 Sportsmanship Award presented by Dodge, the league announced Monday. Carey scored 22 goals and 27 assists in 11 games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. The 26-year-old left-hander has played three seasons for the Mammoth since graduating from Canisius College. He won the NLL Championship with the Mammoth in 2006 and appeared in the 2007 and 2008 NLL All-Star Game. Carey is admired by both teammates and opponents. In 43 career games, Carey has accumulated only 11 penalty minutes, none in 2008. Carey even apologized to Calgary's Steve Dietrich after he delivered a shot which knocked out the veteran goalkeeper in the season opener. MCELROY WINS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Edmonton Rush captain Chris McElroy has won the first-ever Community Service Award presented by Progressive. McElroy has worked tirelessly towards charitable causes and bringing lacrosse to the forefront in the Edmonton area. The Rush's team captain worked with a number of charities this year, including the Stollery Children's Hospital and the St. Valentine's Day Hair Massacre. He also continually promotes the Rush and the sport of lacrosse at every opportunity. The 25-year-old defender scooped 101 loose balls in 16 games this season. The four-year veteran has been with the Rush since the team's inception in 2006. GARRITY NAMED EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR Minnesota Swarm president and governor Tom Garrity has been named the 2008 National Lacrosse League Executive of the Year. Since Garrity took command of the Swarm prior to the 2007 season, attendance has risen 36 percent from an average of 8,372 fans per game in 2006 to 11,405 in 2008. Garrity, a native of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, was named Marketing Executive of the Year in 2007. Previous winners of the award include Dave Zygaj of the Buffalo Bandits, Angela Batinovich of the Portland LumberJax, Steve Govett of the Colorado Mammoth, Brad Banister of the Calgary Roughnecks, Russ Cline of the Philadelphia Wings and the late Les Bartley of the Toronto Rock. TUTKA NAMED WRITER OF THE YEAR The 2008 winner of the "Tom Borrelli Award," presented to the Writer of the Year, is Paul Tutka of NLLInsider.com, which is powered by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. Previous winners of the Tom Borrelli Award include Ty Pilson (2007, Calgary Sun), Sal Maiorana (2006, Rochester Democrat & Chronicle) and Mike Koreen (2005, Toronto Sun). LEAGUE ANNOUNCES TEAM EXECUTIVE AWARDS The National Lacrosse League has also announced the winners of the 2008 Team Executive Awards, which were created to honor those who work behind the scenes. 2008 Team Executive Awards: The NLL also named Jimmy Butler of the New York Titans as Equipment Manager of the Year and Sherri Lashomb of the Buffalo Bandits as the Athletic Trainer of the Year. -30- |
