Titans coach wins Les Bartley AwardAdam Mueller chosen as Coach of the Year; Former boss named GM of YearR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief A week ago, Adam Mueller and Marty O'Neill were preparing for their teams to meet in the first round of the National Lacrosse League playoffs. Today, Mueller and O'Neill were honored by the league, picking up the Les Bartley Award and the General Manager of the Year Award, respectively. Mueller earned the Bartley Award, given to the league's Coach of the Year, after leading the New York Titans from a 4-12 record in 2007 and a 1-4 start this year to a 10-6 record. The Titans went on to defeat O'Neill's Minnesota Swarm last weekend and will play Saturday at Buffalo for a berth in the NLL Championship Game. This season, Mueller, the only head coach in the Titans' two-year existence, became the first coach ever to lead three different teams to the postseason, after having done so with Philadelphia (2002) and Minnesota (2006). As for O'Neill, who hired Mueller in 2005 to be the Swarm's second coach, this is the second consecutive season in which he has been named General Manager of the Year. Minnesota has improved every season under O'Neill, from 5-11 in 2005 to 8-8 a year later and 9-7 last season. This season, the Swarm finished 10-6 and hosted a playoff game for the first time in team history. Previous Bartley Award winners include Ed Comeau (2007), Derek Keenan (2006), Bob Hamley (2005), and Paul Day (2004). Prior to the award's renaming for Bartley, it had been won by Darris Kilgour (2003), Bob McMahon (2002) and Tony Resch (2001). Past recipients of the General Manager of the Year Award include Derek Keenan (2006), Bob Hamley (2005), Johnny Mouradian (2004), Kurt Silcott (2003) and Dave Evans (2002). -30- |
