Cordingley steps down from Riggers' bench

Calgary coach seeks more time with family

Troy Cordingley resigned last week as head coach of the Calgary Roughnecks, leaving the newly-crowned National Lacrosse League champions in favor of more time with his family.

In two seasons with the Roughnecks, Cordingley compiled an overall record of 23-14, including an outstanding 2009 campaign in which the Riggers finished a league-best 12-4 and defeated New York to win the Champion's Cup.

Cordingley was also named the winner of the Les Bartley Award this past season, given to the NLL's Coach of the Year.

Reports have connected Cordingley to coaching positions with Toronto and Buffalo, but, at least for now, he seems content to focus on the homefront.

"I have four young children under nine at home," said Cordingley, whose day job is as a teacher in Port Credit, Ontario. "My family has bent over backwards for me the past few years, and now it's time for me to give back and direct my focus on them."

Cordingley, who also coaches in the Ontario Lacrosse League during the summer, had been commuting to Calgary for games and weekly practices.

The Roughnecks are expected to promote from within to fill Cordingley's place, with assistant coach Terry Sanderson apparently the leading candidate.

Sanderson has previously coached Albany, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, winning the Champion's Cup with the Rock in 2005.

"Terry would be a great coach because he's done it before, many times," Roughnecks owner Brad Banister said. "But both of our assistants -- Dave Pym being the other one -- could take over, as well. We could go with co-coaches, but we haven't made that decision quite yet."

Whoever takes over as coach is likely to inherit a team very similar to the one Cordingley leaves behind -- with the exception of 39-year-old Curt Malawsky, who may retire, all of the core players are expected to return in 2010.
