Colin Doyle nets Player of the Week honorsHad a hand in 6 of Toronto's 8 goals in OT win; Gajic among honoreesNLL Press Release Toronto Rock forward Colin Doyle has been named the National Lacrosse League's Overall Player of the Week for Week Two.
Doyle was directly involved in six of the eight goals Toronto scored on Friday in an 8-7 overtime win over the Boston Blazers. He scored two goals and tallied four assists in a game where goals were few and far between. One of his assists came on the overtime winner, which was scored by Garrett Billings. Doyle, whose night included a first quarter fight with Boston's Paul Dawson, also won the Offensive Player of the Week honors. "I liked the way that [Doyle] led us, in every which way, on Friday," said Toronto Rock head coach Troy Cordingley. "I liked that our captain and leader showed that this team is not backing down. He took on one of the best heavyweights in the league, then came back and led us to a win on our home floor." Colorado Mammoth forward Ilija Gajic was voted Rookie of the Week, picking up the first award of his young NLL career. Gajic, who played college lacrosse at Denver University and was the second overall player selected in the 2009 Entry Draft, scored four goals and tallied three assists in a 14-13 loss to the Edmonton Rush on Saturday. "We are very proud of Ilija's start to the season and expect him to continue to grow into his new role with the team," commented Mammoth president, general manager and interim head coach Steve Govett. Philadelphia Wings goaltender Brandon Miller was named Defensive Player of the Week. Miller stopped 41 of the 49 shots he faced as the Wings defeated Boston, 12-8. The Transition Player of the Week was Bobby McBride of the Rochester Knighthawks. McBride registered a goal, an assist and eight loose balls in Rochester's 13-11 win at Buffalo. The NLL weekly player awards are determined each week by a vote of the general managers and head coaches of the league's eleven member clubs. -30- |
