NLL award winners,
all-pro teams announced
The 1998 NLL First and Second All-Pro Teams, as well as this year's most valuable player and rookie of the year, were announced today by the league after voting by team general managers and coaching staffs.
It comes without surprise that this year's MVP is Baltimore's Gary Gait. This season was a record-setting one for the Syracuse University grad, who became the first player ever in the MILL/NLL to score more than fifty goals in a season (he finished with 57), and led the league in scoring with 85 points. This is Gait's third consecutive MVP award. Finishing second in the balloting was Philadelphia's Kevin Finneran.
The Rookie of the Year award also came without much surprise, even though there was legitimate competition for this award. Ontario's Colin Doyle, who led the Raiders with 61 points (fourth overall in the league), won the award over Syracuse's Chris Prat and Philadelphia's Jake Bergey. Doyle tied for first in power play points (27) and was the Bud Light Game MVP four times. In addition, Doyle was named the March Rookie of the Month.
Also announced today were the All-Pro Teams. The First Team consists of Gait; Finneran; Mark Millon, New York; Darris Kilgour, Buffalo; John Tavares, Buffalo; and Dallas Eliuk, Philadelphia.
The Second Team All-Pros are Doyle; Tom Marechek, Philadelphia; Jim Veltman, Ontario; Paul Gait, Syracuse; Duane Jacobs, Rochester; and Bob Watson, Ontario.
