Powell number one, but British Columbia steals show
Canadian Press
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Syracuse University star Casey Powell was the No. 1 pick, by the Rochester Knighthawks, while five of the first 10 players taken in the National Lacrosse League entry draft Tuesday are from British Columbia.
Rochester gained the first pick as part of its trade of Paul Gait to Syracuse last year. Powell is the 1998 U.S. college player of the year, and his school's all-time points leader.
Kaleb Toth, who amassed 130 points including 69 goals in 24 regular-season games for the junior Burnaby Lakers -- the eventual Canadian junior champions, went second, to Ontario's team, which is in the process of shifting to Toronto from Hamilton. Ontario was using a pick obtained last year from the New York Saints.
Ontario, with its own No. 3 spot in the drafting order, then took Toth's teammate Rory Graham.
Baltimore moved into the No. 4 drafting position by trading Chris Panos to Buffalo and the Thunder took goaltender Chris Sanderson of Orangeville, Ont., native who played for the University of Virginia and was a starter on Canada's national team.
Rochester was fifth up with its own pick and selected Brad McArthur from Brooklin of the OLA major series. McArthur had 35 points this summer in 18 games with the Redmen.
The NLL-champion Philadelphia Wings opted for James Hanford of Loyola College, and the first round ended with the Buffalo Bandits choosing goaltender Matt Disher of the New Westminster Salmonbellies WLA major team.
In the second round, Rochester took Andy Turner of the St. Catharines junior club.
New York then took Curtis Palidwor of the Burnaby senior club.
Ontario then grabbed Cam Sedgwick -- its third junior Laker of the day.
Syracuse selected Bruce Alexander of Mercyhurst College, Buffalo took John Fay of Duke University, Baltimore opted for Jessie Hubbard of Princeton University, and Philadelphia chose Nathan Roost of Hobart College.
Syracuse, with the 58th pick overall, made a symbolic pick -- NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who was a college football and lacrosse star at Syracuse University.
Among draft day trades, Syracuse sent Neil Doddridge and a first-round pick acquired from Philadelphia to Buffalo for Jason Luke and the Bandits' second-round pick.
Baltimore traded Jeff Klodzen and goalie Derek Collins to Syracuse for Rod Tapp and goalie Marty O'Neill.
Syracuse traded Jamie Batley to Buffalo for the Bandits' second-round pick in either the 1999 or 2000 draft.
The seven-team pro league begins its season in late December.
