Veltman named Week Fourteen's top player

NLL Press Release

Jim Veltman, captain of the Toronto Rock, was named today as the recipient of the National Lacrosse League Player of the Week award for Week Fourteen, edging out New York’s Jason Wulder, Syracuse’s Paul Gait, and Baltimore’s Gary Gait for the honor.

In two games this past weekend, Veltman recorded eleven points and picked up 28 loose balls on the way to victories on back-to-back nights, leaving the Rock in their current standing, tied for first place. With Veltman’s five assists over Friday and Saturday night, he moved into a tie for third among the league leaders in that category. Included among his six goals -- which came on just 12 shots on goal -- was the game-winner six seconds into overtime three nights ago at Marine Midland Arena for a 13-12 Toronto win over Buffalo. Entering the weekend, the former Bandit had scored three goals in eight games, before stepping up to help his team clinch a playoff spot. He was named the Game MVP on Saturday evening. The Rock defeated Syracuse 19-12 at home the night before.

This is the second Player of the Week award during the now seven-year career of Veltman, who currently ranks first in the NLL in loose balls recovered with 134, which are 35 more than the second leading total.

Wulder also played in two games in two nights which both resulted in victories for his team. He had six goals and three assists. Wulder was named the Game MVP after scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty shot with 1.3 seconds left in regulation this past Friday night, a 14-13 triumph over the defending NLL champion Philadelphia Wings, who came into the game on a three-game winning streak. Paul Gait had 13 points (eight goals, five assists) over the course of Friday night’s loss in Toronto and a one-goal loss to Wulder and the Saints the next night at home. Gary Gait had a six goal, four assist, Game MVP performance on the road against the Knighthawks on Saturday night in Rochester in a battle of 6-3 teams.
