Paul Gait picks up where brother Gary left off last week

NLL Press Release

After recording three goals and three assists on Saturday night to finish the season with 37 goals and 37 assists, a Gait has been named National Lacrosse League Player of the Week for the second week in a row. Syracuse’s Paul Gait was named today as the winner of the award for the just completed final weekend of the 1999 NLL season. Twin brother Gary Gait of the Baltimore Thunder was announced one week ago today as having earned the Week Fifteen honor.

Paul Gait’s performance led his team to a 14-11 win over the visiting Buffalo Bandits and earned him Game MVP honors. His point total left him third overall in the league in scoring this year. Buffalo had scored three straight fourth quarter goals for a rally that cut the Smash’s lead to 11-9 before Gait halted them by scoring the eventual game-winning goal with 3:23 left in the game.

Today’s announcement marks the fifth Player of the Week award of Gait’s career. He also had shared this season’s Week Three honor with brother Gary.

Runners-up for this week’s award were Dan Stroup of the Toronto Rock and Tim Soudan of the Rochester Knighthawks. Stroup registered his league-leading third game-winning goal in Friday night’s 10-9 win at New York which clinched first place for Toronto. He finished with two goals and three assists. Soudan was the Game MVP of Rochester’s 10-9 home victory over Philadelphia three nights ago. He recorded three goals and one assist and picked up ten loose balls.
