Wings name Govett as general manager

Former Philadelphia Wings forward Steve Govett was named the team's general manager, it was announced today by team president Russ Cline.

In a career that spanned from 1994 to 1998, Govett established a reputation for himself with his physical style and his great understanding of the game, recording 115 penalty minutes in thirty-six regular season games while tallying twenty-six goals and twenty-three assists. His five-year career, played entirely for Philadelphia, included league championships in 1994, 1995, and 1998.

Now, though, his leadership and "lacrosse sense" must be transferred to running an NLL team, including coordinating player acquisitions, scouting, staffing and recruiting; organizing the team's tryouts and training camp; and producing sponsorship and marketing opportunities for the team and individual players.

"Steve is a tremendous leader both on and off the field and he possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge of the indoor lacrosse game," said Cline in making the announcement. "We are confident that he will maintain that level of leadership and contribute to taking the Wings to the top of the National Lacrosse League."

This past season, Executive Vice President Michael French assumed the duties of general manager. French will continue as Executive Vice President, while Govett handles the day-to-day operations in coordination with the coaching staff and the Wings' home office in Kansas City, Missouri.

"I'm looking forward to creating new and exciting opportunities for the Wings not only on the field, but in the marketplace," said Govett.

The Burnaby, British Columbia native attended Radford University, where he set the school's scoring record, with 118 goals. He resides in Robbinsville, New Jersey with wife Eileen and daughter MacKensie.
