U.S. wins field lacrosse World Cup

Canadian Press

Casey Powell, former Syracuse University national player of the year and current star for the NLL's Rochester Knighthawks, scored a game-high five goals to lead the United States to a 20-10 victory Friday night over Canada and the 1999 World Cup of Lacrosse championship.

The U.S. took the best-of-three series in two games, winning the opener 16-15 Wednesday.

The Canadians tied the game 7-7 in the second quarter, but the Americans scored nine of the next 10 goals to hold a 16-8 lead with less than a minute left in the third quarter.

"Last game, we got by on emotion and athleticism," Canadian goalkeeper Chris Sanderson said. "Today, the U.S. exploited our weaknesses. It was really obvious."

Powell, named tournament MVP, and Jesse Hubbard each scored twice during the 9-1 run.

Hubbard finished with three goals, as did Tim Soudan. Blake Miller added two.

John Grant and Colin Doyle both scored twice for the Canadians. Jamie Bowen had one goal and three assists.

The U.S. squad outshot the Canadians 48-37.
