Albany goes on the AttackExpansion club selects name, today will select playersAlbany Times-Union Albany's National Lacrosse League franchise has a nickname. Now the next order of business for the expansion team is acquiring some players. Owner Herb Chorbajian announced the team name as the Albany Attack in a news conference on Tuesday at Pepsi Arena. The Attack, an indoor lacrosse team, will begin play at Pepsi Arena in January. The nickname was chosen through a name-the-team contest that was run through area newspapers and over the Internet. Attack was one of ten nicknames suggested on the ballot; fans could also write in their suggestions. Chorbajian said that of 649 entries, Attack received the most votes (around 50). "We're real pleased with the response that we got," Chorbajian said. "We had left ourselves an opening that we didn't have to pick the name that got the most votes, but around the Chorbajian dinner table, Attack was the favorite." Chorbajian said he likes the name because attack is a position on a lacrosse team. The winner of the contest was Steve McClellan, 31, of Albany, whose name was drawn out of a hat among all the people who voted for Attack. The prize was two season tickets. The team doesn't have a logo yet. Chorbajian said that Mike DeRossi, the team's director of operations, is working on it. Next on the agenda is finding players. This morning at 11, the Attack is scheduled to select the first seven players in its history in the expansion draft. Albany will select one player left unprotected by each of the league's other seven teams -- Buffalo, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Syracuse, Toronto. On Sept. 21, the league holds its college entry draft at the Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo. Chorbajian said the franchise has received almost 100 deposits for season tickets even though a marketing campaign hasn't started yet. Deposits for full and partial season ticket packages are being accepted at the Pepsi Arena box office from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. -30- |
