Albany selects seven veterans
in expansion draft

Coach's son, goaltender among first Attack players

Albany Attack coach and general manager Terry Sanderson was ecstatic when the pro indoor lacrosse expansion draft ended Wednesday. After all, it had supplied the Attack with its first seven players.

Sanderson said he thought his insider's knowledge of indoor lacrosse helped him steal a few gems -- including the goaltender he desperately needed -- from the other seven teams in the third-year National Lacrosse League.

Sanderson, however, didn't need a scouting report for one of his selections. All he needed was to look across the dinner table.

Forward Josh Sanderson, the coach's son, was among the players selected by the Attack, which will begin its 14-game regular season in January at Pepsi Arena.

Josh Sanderson, a 22-year-old who played for the Rochester Knighthawks last season, wasn't among the dozen players the Knighthawks protected in the draft.

Each team could protect either 12 players (10 runners and two goaltenders) or 14 players (13 runners, one goaltender). The Attack was allowed to pick one unprotected player from each team.

"This is a coach talking about his player, not a father talking about his son," said the elder Sanderson. "My point of view is he could play more than what he was allowed to do last year."

Sanderson had six goals and six assists last season.

The first player Terry Sanderson picked was goaltender Rob Blaisdell of the defending league champion Toronto Rock.

Blaisdell is a bona-fide starting goaltender in the league, Sanderson said, but was the odd man out in Toronto because the Rock had another fine goaltender, Bob Watson.

"I'm ecstatic with having Rob Blaisdell," Sanderson said. "He will be our number one (goaltender). I cannot see somebody coming and putting him out of a job. If somebody does, are we ever set."

The other five players Albany selected were all forwards: Troy Cordingley of the Buffalo Bandits; Steve Sombrotto, New York Saints; Todd Evans, Philadelphia Wings; David Evans, Pittsburgh; and Owen Benedict, Syracuse Smash.

Sanderson said that his son, Blaisdell, Cordingley and Benedict stand the best chance of making the team's 23-man roster.

The Attack will be allowed to start signing free agents on Friday. The NLL will holds its collegiate draft on 21 September, in Buffalo.
