Training camps begin to open across league
Albany, New York start tryouts this weekend
NLL Press Release
General Manager/Head Coach Terry Sanderson will get his initial look at players vying for a spot on the first roster of the expansion Albany Attack as the first two of the eight National Lacrosse League team training camps open this weekend.
The Attack were schedule for physicals today, then take to the floor on Saturday morning, 16 October, for the first of two sessions that day. Among those competing for a spot on the club which will begin their first season Friday, 7 January 2000 (at the First Union Center in Philadelphia against the Wings) is University of Delaware graduate Dennis DeBusschere. The 24-year old was chosen by Albany with the first pick in the seventh round of the NLL Draft on 21 September. The 6’1", 195 pounder is the son of Dave DeBusschere, who was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996 after an eleven year playing career (1962-73) with Detroit and New York. Dennis DeBusschere had 47 points (39 goals and eight assists) in 17 games in his senior year as a midfielder with the Blue Hens.
Approximately 150 miles south of where the Attack will be on Saturday, the New York Saints will be starting their first of eight scheduled training camp sessions. Unlike Albany, however, the workouts for New York this weekend will consist of free agents only.
Over the following two weekends three more NLL teams will open training camp. On Friday, 22 October the Philadelphia Wings begin preparations for their 14th season. The next day the Pittsburgh CrosseFire take to the floor for the first time since their move over the summer from Baltimore where they played for the past 13 seasons as the Thunder. And, the Rochester Knighthawks return to the floor one week after that (on 30 October) for the first time since 23 April, when they appeared in their third World Championship Game in five years.
Training camps for the Buffalo Bandits and Toronto Rock are set to begin in November.
