Bandits, Knighthawks claim top spots in four-way scrimmage
Each club posts two wins in tournament with Attack, Smash
Outsider's Guide wire reports
The Rochester Knighthawks posted two wins and a ties, and the Buffalo Bandits two wins and a loss, to pace the field at last night's four-way scrimmage at Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo. Each team played the others in twenty-minute games.
The competition was delayed approximately thirty minutes, due to a delay in crossing the border for many of the Canadian players. The Bandits were hit particularly hard, with only a handful of players -- no goaltenders included -- at the arena in time for the 7:00 PM starting time.
When play finally began, Buffalo topped the Albany Attack 7-3. Bandits rookie Pat Maddelena led the scoring, with three goals.
Playing for the second straight game, the Bandits were thoroughly defeated by Rochester, 8-3. John Grant, Jr. registered a hat trick for the winning Knighthawks, and Dan Teat added a goal and an assist.
The Knighthawks quickly turned around and extinguished the Syracuse Smash, 6-1. Steve Dietrich tended goal for Rochester, as he continues his return from a second torn ACL in as many years.
Albany returned to play in the fourth game, and avenged its opening-game loss by defeating Syracuse, 3-2.
The red-hot Knighthawks were cooled slightly in game five, as Albany managed a 7-7 tie with the winningest club in the tournament. Grant and Curt Malawsky each scored a goal for the Knighthawks.
The four-way concluded with the Bandits defeating Syracuse, 3-1.
For the evening, Rochester finished 2-0-1; Buffalo 2-1; Albany 1-1-1; and Syracuse 0-3. When all preseason contests, including a four-way held earlier this month by the Wings, the standings are as follows: Philadelphia 3-0; Rochester 3-0-1; Pittsburgh 2-1; Buffalo 2-2; Albany 2-3-1; New York 0-3; and Syracuse 0-3 (Toronto has scheduled no exhibitions). Albany visits Syracuse on 2 January, in the final game of the exhibition season.
