Power Rankings and the PlayoffsAttack poised to claim Power Ranking title from 2001 winner RockChad Gambone Outsider's Guide The National Lacrosse League Power Ranking formula is based completely on a mathematical formula that uses wins, loss, goals for and against, shots for and against, and how well the team has been playing lately. Any e-mail directed to me that is of the form "You obviously hate Team X, because..." or "You are so biased in favor of Team Y, since..." will be summarily ignored. So, without further ado, here are the Power Rankings for Week Five: 1. Albany Attack 13.0555 (12) 2. Rochester Knighthawks 12.5543 ( 4) 3. Toronto Rock 10.8783 ( 9) 4. Vancouver Ravens 8.5404 (13) 5. Washington Power 7.6980 (11) 6. Montreal Express 6.6324 ( 5) 7. Philadelphia Wings 5.5929 ( 8) 8. Buffalo Bandits 5.4157 ( 1) 9 . Columbus Landsharks 3.2596 ( 6) 10. New York Saints 2.1551 ( 2) 11. Calgary Roughnecks 0.5507 ( 7) 12. New Jersey Storm 0.5209 (10) 13. Ottawa Rebel 0.0000 ( 3) The Power Rankings are normalized so the last team has a ranking of 0.0000. The Power Rankings can be interpreted as follows. If Albany is playing Philadelphia next week, the difference in the rankings is the estimated goal differential in the final score. Also, there is an adjustment added to the home team, which is currently 1.2307 goals. Thus if the Attack are at the Wings, and the Attack have a rating of 7.2307, and the Wings have a rating of 8.0000, the Wings should be expected to win by two goals. The number in parentheses after the ranking represent schedule strength. A ranking of 1 represents the toughest schedule so far; a ranking of 13 represents the easiest schedule. The Attack clinch the top playoff seed and Central Division title with a win
or a Rochester loss.
Notes on Week Nineteen's games Rochester Knighthawks (-8.0) @ Columbus Landsharks, Friday 7:30 PM Rochester uses this final game to tune up for their annual postseason run, making the playoffs for a eighth consecutive time. They need the win as well, in order to put pressure on Albany for the division crown. Columbus ends their second home season with this game, with had to be a disappointing season. Attendance dropped off significantly from year one, and a promising season has collapsed to a 5-9 record. Philadelphia Wings @ Toronto Rock (-6.5), Friday 7:30 PM
After eighteen weeks of waiting, the league finally gets to see the rematch of last year's thrilling final, and not just once, but twice, in a matter of twenty four hours. It's Toronto's first shot at revenge for the Wings 9-8 victory, however, the Wings are desperate for victories just to get into the postseason dance in 2002. Two Wings wins will assure the defending champs of their eleventh straight berth and fifteenth in sixteen seasons, but a split requires some help. Vancouver Ravens (-7.0) @ Calgary Roughnecks, Saturday 2:30 PM With the victory in Vancouver over the Roughnecks last weekend, the Ravens became the fourth expansion team to clinch a berth in their opening season, joining Detroit, Buffalo, and Rochester. A win in this game would assure them of a trip to either Rochester or Albany next weekend for a quarterfinal match up. For the other western team, the season has not been as successful, but the future is bright for a team that has the fans interest and has recovered well from a pair of season-opening routs by Montreal. Buffalo Bandits @ Washington Power (-3.5), Saturday 7:00 PM The once-proud Bandit franchise will miss the playoffs for the third time in four years in 2002, but they can still cause some havoc. A win can cost Montreal a playoff berth, or cost the Power a bye. They can also finish the season at .500, a somewhat appropriate result for a team that alternated wins and losses in its first eleven outings of the year. Washington needs help from divisional rival Philadelphia to earn a week off, but even if the Power can't catch the Rock, they'll want to close out the Capital Centre in style. Montreal Express @ Albany Attack (-7.5), Sunday 7:00 PM If the Wings split and the the Bandit win, the Montreal Express will be playing for their playoff lives in this game. Even if the Express has wrapped up the berth, they'll want to play well to improve on their 1-6 record against postseason teams. For Albany, the game could mean the difference of having a week off and then hosting Rochester, or hosting a quarterfinal game and travelling to Rochester for a possible semifinal. Columbus Landsharks (-1.5) @ New Jersey Storm, Saturday 7:30 PM
The Sharks, Saints, Storm, and Rebel all end postseason-less campaigns with this trio of games. New York and Ottawa each have missed five consecutive playoffs, a league record. For New Jersey, wins over Washington and Philadelphia may have salvaged a complete disaster of a season, while in Ohio, the youngest team in the league will be hoping to mature into a contender soon. -30- |
